What is Anxiety?

  Anxiety is a common human emotion that everyone goes through at some point in their lives, such as when confronted with a difficulty at work, before taking a test, or while making a major decision. Anxiety disorders, on the other hand, are distinct. They produce so much distress that it makes it impossible for a person to live a regular life. Worry and fear are frequent and overpowering for persons with anxiety disorders, and they can be crippling.

  Panic disorder, social anxiety disorder, particular phobias, and generalised anxiety disorder are examples of anxiety disorders.

 Anxiety disorders are thought to be caused by difficulties in the functioning of brain circuits that regulate fear and other emotions, according to several brain experts. Severe or long-term stress has been found in studies to alter the way nerve cells in these circuits carry information from one brain region to another. Other research has discovered that persons with anxiety disorders have alterations in brain areas that control memories associated with powerful emotions.

 Anxiety disorders, like the risk of heart disease, run in families, meaning they can be at least partially inherited from one or both parents. Furthermore, in those who have a hereditary sensitivity to anxiety disorders, certain environmental variables, such as a traumatic event, might start the illness.

 Millions of adults in the United States suffer from anxiety problems. They affect women slightly more frequently than males.
